In my opinion, I found this unit to be very informative, as it relates to course books and lesson material. Often time, we as teachers have to create our own material to either supplement the course book or replace sections that are not suitable for the class. Materials that are created by teachers can be more interesting, more relevant and a welcome change from the course book. Materials are divided into two main parts, authentic material, and created material. Authentic material is anything a native speaker would hear or read, such as magazines, newspapers, songs, poems, brochures, menus, and films on video. An authentic material will boost the confidence of the students if they are able to understand it. However, an authentic material is not graded to the level of the students, because it’s made for native speaker and not for ESL learners. The created material, on the other hand, usually designed by the teacher to replace or supplement material from a course book. Unlike authentic material, a created material can be graded to the level of the students, and its more students focus, however, some students may find material created by students to be a bit boring because it’s not real. Finally, teachers can use course book to maximum effect, by using the materials contained in the book in a way that they see fit or perceives to be most beneficial for the students.
