Corder, Missouri TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This section covered the building blocks of grammar; I.e. parts of speech. I was shocked to learn two things specifically, both of which I teach my current private students, albeit differently:
1) I had previously not known the term gerund, and was surprised that a gerund is not in fact called a verb. This will help immensely in explaining to students the subtle differences that native speakers like myself often take for granted due to the fact that we have internalized a lot of this knowledge without realizing it.
2) As a long-time learner of French, I had learned transitive and intransitive verbs, but never understood the actual difference between them. It was pleasantly surprising to see the depth of this course, and to understand such subtleties in English. I will now confidently be able to explain that a transitive verb cannot stand alone, while an intransitive verb can (and that my students can think about it as transitive = transitioning versus intransitive = standalone).
These nuances, along with the irregularities that are clearly spelled out in this course will help me immensely, not just with my current students, but with long-term teaching abroad, which I hope to do once I have finished my certification.
