Unit 1 Teachers and Learners establishes the many roles a teacher may embody in the classroom. The unit also discusses key elements to being a good teacher and a good learner. A classification of language ability is also mentioned, elaborating on the signifiers of each level. In addition, a few common obstacles are named such as student nervousness, a lack of motivation, and the importance of cultural awareness. I can see now there are many more roles for a teacher than I once thought. Roles like the manager and model seem obvious, but I had not considered the importance of a good assessor or facilitator. While some roles come naturally, I expect that I could benefit by being comfortable in any role as only one method of teaching will not be effective in all teaching situations nor with all learners.
