There are 5 types of conditionals in English.
The zero conditional (if+present simple, present simple) is used for scientific facts, truths about ourselves.
The first conditional (if+present simple, will+basic verb form) is used for situations that are possible and quite likely to happen, also for promises and threats.
The second conditional (if+past simple, would+basic form) is used for imaginary situations, dreams, and so on.
The third conditional (if+past perfect, would+have+V3) is used for unreal events in the past that never took place with their possible result, also in the past.
The mixed conditional (e.g. if+past perfect, would+base form) is used for situations, events which did never happen in the past, but the result of these never-happened actions we see at present.
When we use reported speech, we should remeber about shift of tenses and changes of adverbs of time.
