Unit three presents concepts about how language is taught. While not all techniques are new to me, the unit informed me of the benefits and pitfalls of different teaching methods. For example, I had not considered the merit of foregoing student correction during the early “engage” portions of a class. I can understand now how too much correction, especially early in the class could be discouraging to some students. I also find the distinction between a mistake and an error very useful. As a teacher, it could be counterproductive to constantly stop and correct each mistake. Rather a more effective approach would be to focus on students’ repeated errors. This prevents the teacher from disrupting too often and from discouraging students.
