Unit 5 explores the most important elements of classroom management. In order to provide an effective learning environment for students, the teacher must be able to manage the class and maintain discipline, while remaining friendly and relaxed. The first elements discussed in this unit are the importance of eye contact, a good use of gestures and how to use your voice effectively. Following this, the unit discusses how students can be grouped, how classroom arrangement is important to suit different types of activities and how to minimize writing on the board during class. This unit also covers giving individual attention to students and discusses how a balance between teacher talking time (TTT) and student talking time (STT) has to be maintained. The last section of Unit 5 tackles an important issue, namely maintaining discipline.
This unit covered various elements on classroom management that I was not previously familiar with due to my lack of experience teaching. I found the section regarding grouping students and maintaining discipline to be of most use, since these sections included several methods the teacher can use to make the classroom as conducive to learning as possible.
