Alton, Missouri TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit covers a wide variety of teaching materials which can help a teacher accomplish various goals in the classroom. Each type of resource also contains advantages/ disadvantages and main usages. While some, like the cassette player are clearly extremely outdated, I did find some that were extremely useful such as the interactive whiteboards, video cameras & resource books. Interactive whiteboards are something of which I had never heard before this lesson. I can definitely see that as being something (if available) that could be useful in class activities in all stages, but especially in the study phase of an ESA lesson. Brainstorming and notes can be put on the IWB and then sent out to students later, making their attention more focused on the board instead of on hurriedly writing down everything they see. Video cameras have been around for some time, but I had never thought about using one in a classroom and playing it back so that students could listen to themselves, and with the teacher's guidance, work on the areas in which they are weak. Finally, resource books seem like a great way to expand upon the activities in the class as well as any homework assignments to reinforce learning done during the lesson. It seems best to use a multitude of these resources (aside from just the 3 mentioned above) to have a well-rounded, interesting and varied discussion in each lesson. This unit concludes with many valuable internet resources for dictionaries, literature & poetry, media and the most important for me (and others taking this course), teaching.
