This units explains how to teach receptive skills to students of the English language. Both reading and listening are equally important and should be balanced (together with two productive skills). These skills can be used for a purpose or for entertainment, in some cases these two motives can mix together. While reading and listening people employ a number of special skills to find desired information in a efficient way or to understand text more accurately (for example when using pre-existing knowledge).
A teacher may face several issues while teaching receptive skills. They are linked to the language, topics, students' interest (or lack of it) and tasks to be completed by students. I have learnt several ways to approach and minimize these potential issues (for example pre-teaching difficult vocabulary and adjusting material difficulty to the students' level).
