Testing can give important feedback to teachers on the needs of their students and whether or not their teaching is successful. Placement or diagnostic tests are designed to be given at the beginning of the course to give an indication of the level of the students and what areas need improvement. Progress tests cover material which has already been taught and can indicate if topics need to be revisited. Practice tests for external exams mimic the external exam and are designed to give the students practice. Students will often need to take external exams in order to work, go to school, or immigrate permanently to an English speaking country. Certain jobs in their home country may also require an English fluency exam. Class evaluations give the teacher feedback on how the students have absorbed/enjoyed the class and allow the students to feel more involved.
