Deciding what new vocabulary to introduce depends on a number of factors including appropriateness, relevancy to other content, frequency of use, and teachability. Difficulty of new language can be effected by factors including similarity to students language or english words already learned and pronunciation. Students need to know the word, spelling, pronunciation, grammar usage, and the way the word affects other words. When teaching grammar students need to know the meaning, construction, pronunciation, and differences in spoken and written usage. Straight arrow or boomerang lessons can be useful in teaching grammar and vocabulary. Gap fill, crossword, word jumble, and word search activities are helpful for study phases of a vocabulary lesson, while sentence unscramble and gap fill are useful in grammar lessons. Both can use storybuilding, interviews, and communication games in the activate and engage stages. Teaching functions like inviting, refusing, debating, presenting can be well suited to patchwork lessons. students need to know the use of the function, the necessary vocabulary, and the necessary grammar. Activities like role playing are especially useful for teaching functions.
