This unit discusses teaching different groups of students and the dos and don'ts for each. There are different types of beginner students - absolute beginners, false beginners, adult beginners, young beginners and beginners without Roman alphabet. For each type, the teacher needs to adjust the lesson structure and content to make it most efficient.
When teaching one-on-one, the teacher can adjust the contents of the course to fit the student's needs better than when in group class. However some of the activities are not possible to perform, for example a 'find someone who' survey.
When teaching business students, the teacher does not need to possess in-depth knowledge of the industry, but can elicit the language needs from the students.
For individual and business students it is true that they usually will attend classes after work and may be tired, so the amount of material needs to be adjusted accordingly. When planning the course for these two groups, it is advisable to perform the needs analysis to understand what the students want to practice and what they think their weak sides are.
Teaching different types of groups poses different challenges and the teacher needs to be prepared to satisfy specific language needs according to the type of group he or she teaches.
