Methods and styles of classroom management will vary depending on class siz, student age, cultural expectations, and teachers personal style. Teachers can encourage a more informal intimate feel with horseshoe or grouped desks which also allow for easier organization into groups, although can make it somewhat more difficult to control the class and maintain eye contact. For some portions of the lesson (explanations, instructions, and language presentation) it is most appropriate for the teacher to be standing which allows all students to see and hear better. For group or pair work it is good to check that the instructions were understood by wondering about the classroom at the beginning of the activity and again near the end, otherwise it's helpful to sit down and allow students to do the work. Chalkboard writing time should be minimized, done beforehand, or while the students are focused on other activities. Overhead projectors are nice. Teacher talk time is helpful and necessary in language presentation, correction, and giving instructions but should otherwise be minimized. Instructions should be clear, precise and in language at or below the level of the students. Demonstrating is better than telling, and comprehension should be checked by asking the student to explain the instructions back to you.
