Speaking and writing are both important skills. Lessons geared toward speaking should whenever possible be about subjects that interest the students. Study phases should include a lot of controlled practice/accuracy activities to give the students opportunity to practice correct grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary. During the engage phase students should be focused on fluency activities, given lots of time to prepare, and if correction is needed it should be taken note of and addressed later.
Lessons and activities aimed at improving writing skills should also address topics of interest to the students. Penmanship may be an issue that needs work in countries which use a non-latin alphabet, and issues of spelling and punctuation may also need work (because good lord could English have spelling which is any more arbitrary?). Students should be taught which types of language are appropriate for which situations, and a variety of formats they are likely to encounter in real life situations. Creative writing exercises can be a fun, engaging way to get students writing. Communicative and linguistic games can be great ways to get students to practice language while having fun.
