Grammar is my favorite topic since I was in elementary level. I has grown deeply in me during my intermediate years because my teacher then was very patient. Nowadays, I often know how to compose my sentences properly but not consciously identifying their parts. This lesson has reminded a lot about the importance of being able to identify the parts of speech which we use in our daily communications.
NOUNS are names of people, animals, places, things, qualities and states. The following are the main types: common, proper, compound, abstract and collective. Nouns also has plural, countable and uncountable nouns.
ADJECTIVES are used to describe nouns such as people and things. When using two or more adjectives in a sentence, we use the basic rule to put it in order: size, age, color, material and noun. Adjectives also have its comparative (used to compare two people or things) and superlative types (used with more than two people or things).
ARTICLES have two types, definite and indefinite. A/An are indefinite articles refer to any member of a group, and are used with singular nouns. The article 'a' is used with a singular noun beginning with a consonant or beginning with a consonant sound, while 'an' is used with a noun beginning with a vowel. The article 'the' is as useful as the other two and refers to a noun which is unique.
VERBS are easier to understand as it is known as the "doing" word, but there are also verbs which refer to state of being of a certain noun. Verbs are identified as transitive, intransitive and infinitive. Verbs also have its forms - regular and irregular. An auxiliary verb is a kind that helps form a structure of the sentence.
ADVERBS add meaning or information to the action, quality or state of the verb. It can also be used to alter an adjective or another adverb. The five main types of Adverbs are: manner, place, time, degree and frequency. Other notable types are: comment / attitude, linking, viewpoint and adding/limiting. They are usually ending with 'ly' i.e. humbly, perfectly. Adverbs may be placed after the object of a transitive verb, after an intransitive verb or in cases of the adverbs of frequency they are placed between the subject and the verb or between the auxiliary verb and the verb. In sentences where multiple adverbs are used, the sequence of place, manner and time is very helpful.
GERUNDS are simply the -ing form of a verb used as a noun. Gerunds are used as a noun and not as a verb in present participle form.
PRONOUNS are used in place of more precise nouns or noun phrases. The following are the types of pronouns: personal, possessive, reflexive and relative.
PREPOSITIONS show the relationship between a noun or a pronoun and some other word in the sentence. This can be one of the most challenging grammatical points for bothe the learners and the teachers. The main types include preposition of time / date, movement and place / position.
CONJUNCTIONS are used to join two words or groups in a sentence. They can join words of the same class by using the words and, but, or, nor, yet, both...and, either...or...neither...nor, not only...but also; and clauses of sentences when the words as, as soon as, before, since, until, when, because, although, unless, so, and in order are used.
