The use of a textbook can help give structure to a semester and make the students feel like they're learning. It usually provides a balance of grammar, vocabulary, and function practice, introduces new language at a steady rate, and continually reinforces previously taught concepts. Teachers shouldn't rely too much on the textbook though, because it isn't specifically tailored to the students needs and may not even be targeted to their language. Teaching exclusively from the book can also be boring and predictable. Teachers should make critical decisions about which lessons and activities are useful or necessary for their students and omit or change any which aren't relevant. Textbook lessons can be supplemented by both authentic and inauthentic materials which are carefully chosen for graded language. Whenever possible materials should be on a topic interesting to the students.
