Teaching both reading and listening skills is very important. Reading skills can be easier for students because they have infinite time to process the information whereas when listening students need to absorb and process the information very quickly. We read and listen to information in a variety of ways depending on whether our purpose is to gather information or for entertainment. Teaching receptive skills can be fun and enjoyable for the students with the right content selection. Content should be on a variety of topics over a period of time, so as to engage as many students as possible. If possible target content specifically to things you know the students are interested in. Content can be either authentic or non-authentic but should be targeted to be someone challenging but not incredibly difficult. Some vocabulary can be pretaught, but students don't need to understand every word and should be encouraged to become comfortable with understanding the gist while being exposed to new vocabulary.
