Different issues can arise with different groups. Keeping things clear and simple and at the level of the students can help with many issues. when dealing with large groups doing lots of pairwork and worksheets can be helpful. Appointing group leaders can help organize group work effectively, and special care should be taken with large classrooms to ensure that all boardwork is visible and instruction is audible. When working with reluctant students one strategy is to allow them plenty of time to prepare their language and use more roleplay activities. In order to minimize use of L1 in the classroom a teacher should not respond to questions that aren't expressed in English, students should be encouraged to use English unless they absolutely can't find a way to express themselves and reminded often, and activities should be carefully selected so that they are at the level of the students. When planning a first lesson it's important to establish rapport between the teacher and the students and between the students and each other. This is best done with interviews and question games. It's also important to establish the needs, interest, and existing English level of the students. First lessons shouldn't focus on new language and shouldn't be taught from the coursebook.
