This unit is about conditional speech and reported speech.
Conditional sentences are about where some situation needs to be (or would need to have been) filled before a certain consequence can happen (or would have happened). There are five different forms of conditional sentences, with uses ranging from the certain, to the likely, to the very hypothetical. They all have slightly different sentence structures.
Reported speech, also known as indirect speech, is where a third party is reporting the conversations or actions that previously took place between various subjects. When speech is reported a number of changes take place, such as removing question marks, adding "if or whether", changing pronouns, and changing tenses. The changes can be very complicated, especially when considered together, so students should be taught these changes cumulatively and slowly.
