This unit has dealt with the past tense and the four forms, namely: past simple, past continuous, past perfect and past perfect continuous. These tenses begin to show the formation of rules or patterns when compared to the present tenses covered in a previous unit. The rules include that continuous forms have a form of the verb 'to be' plus '-ing' attached to the verb, the perfect forms have a form of the verb 'to have' and the past participle of the verb and lastly, the perfect continuous forms have a form of the verb 'to have' with 'been'and the '-ing' form of the verb. This rule makes it easier to identify each of the tenses based upon sentence structure alone.
