This unit begins with an introduction in teaching methologies (Grammer-translation, The silent way, Suggestopedia etc.). There is no methodology that is decisively the best but bits and pieces of various methologies intermingle in modern teaching. I then learned the basic elements of teaching, Engage-Study-Activate, (ESA). The Engagement phase begins with elicitation o,r in other words, with the teacher eliciting the participation of the students through though-provoking questions. The objective of the engagement phase is to make the student speak and practice the English they know as a warm up. The Study phase involves with teaching the student the new language through various exercises and oftentimes begins with eliciting from the students. Lastly, the engagement phase seeks to encourage the student to use all the language that they know including what has been learned in the study portion of the class. A class that follows the E-S-A elements I’d referred as a straight arrow plan. However, classes can also be in different formats, such as a Boomerang class (E-A-S-A) or, a Patchwork model, that must start with Engagement and finishe with Activate but can be varied in the middle.
