When I first started learning a foreign language I did not pay attention to the divide between receptive skill and productive skills. Looking back I now think that is an important distinction to make. I just so happen to be better at receptive skills. That does not mean that receptive skills are necessarily easier than productive skills but as mentioned in this unit the "captured" language of a text can make reading at one's own pace more pleasant than learning other parts of language. I think it is very important to select materials that are suitable for students but also to expose them to authentic material from time to time as well. I like the suggestions provided in this unit such a pre-teaching vocabulary and testing for comprehension. Using movies and music is also a good idea because it shows the pleasurable benefits of learning a foreign language, especially English.
