Students don't need to know the origin of words but they need to be exposed to it, understand its meaning, understand how it's constructed and be able to practice and produce it. Same thing for grammatical structures, they need to know how, when and where they should be used. When introducing new vocabulary and/or grammatical structures, unit 3 is addressed as different ways to approach the lessons. However, there is no correct ESA method, so the teacher should always think about which structure is most appropriate for the class and the language that will be introduced.
