In my opinion, course books are just like a guide for the teacher. They provide a tried and tested syllabus graded to a students’ level and balanced mix of grammar, vocabulary and exercises, but they usually need to be supplemented by teacher. Topics in the course book may be not interesting for the students and oudated, even the books published 2-3 years ago does not contain topical texts. Worksheets and exercises may be boring as well. The best way of the course book use is to use it during study phase, whilst created and authentic materials are the best for engage and activate phases.
