This unit is a good overview of how students process reading comprehension. Vocabulary and grammar are the building blocks of strong receptive skills. Texts must fit the students’ age and language levels and teach them something engaging, like the unit’s example of popular culture. I think the patchwork example was used very well in the unit; by engaging the students twice, it gets them thinking more about Elvis, what they know and want to know about him. It goes beyond just showing a song or two then having them write something. The lesson gives students time to think more about the singer’s life and how they understand other celebrities’ lives. Students would be reading and rereading the text, discussing it with their classmates, and then writing fun and creative pieces.
