Unit 11 has taught me that, reading and listening are two major components of receptive skills. Hence, the way we source or gather information is very important as we usually read for a purpose or entertainment. When we read for a purpose it helps us to achieve our aims and goals while entertainment is for enjoyment, pleasure or relaxation.
The teacher usually uses reading and listening skills to empower themselves and to build confidence by using a text that is interesting and by extension can be used to motivate their students. The teacher can also use a variety of topics over a series of lessons when to arouse the interest of their students.
In reading, we sometimes skimmed and scanned through to get the high points. Reading and listening also enables an individual to predict the content of an article from a headline or introduction. Therefore, an effective teacher would use it to engage the students.
The teacher should ensure that reading and listening task is given for students’ understanding rather than just accessing their learning abilities.
