This unit is about the productive skills of language, that is speaking and writing. Both of these skills are essential for communication, and have their different challenges. On the one hand, writing often requires more formal language and accurate spelling; accuracy is very important, but the students can take their time to prepare their output. On the other hand, speaking is less formal, doesn't require spelling skills, and misunderstandings are easily cleared up at the time; however, students must be more "on their toes" with less time to prepare a response. Therefore, speaking can be considered more of a "fluency" skill.
The unit also suggests ways to encourage students to want to communicate, to overcome their fears & shyness to be a part of communicative activities. It shows you how to choose and carry out a good speaking activity, which is often a very important "Activate" phase of an E-S-A lesson. It also suggests good games that can be modified for this purpose.
