Speaking and writing are the two productive skills which need to be taught, and have similarities and differences. Writing is more difficult as it takes aspects such as punctuation, letter formation, grammar, spelling, etc. into consideration which speaking does not. With both skills it is important to permit learners to have time to think and formulate a response, although speaking does not lend itself as well to this as writing does. It is crucial for the teacher to create a need or desire in learners to communicate or learners will not participate and the lesson will not be successful. I have learnt that games should be used as often as possible to teach these skills and not just as an 'add-on' or 'fill-in' activity as it is often considered to be. When using games, both co-operative and competitive games can be used with consideration being made for whether the game is meant to be linguistic (language) or communicative (non-linguistic goal or aim) as this will determine which game is used.
