It is easy to see, that past tenses can be divided in the same way as present tenses into 4 categories (simple, continuous, perfect and perfect continuous). The difference in the verb 'to be' in continuous tenses shows us whether it is present or past continuous form. If the verb 'to be' is in the past - it means we have past continuous; if 'to be' is in the present - present continuous. The same situation is with perfect forms and the verb 'to have'. I think this way of presentation the past tenses is easy to remember and present to the students.
