UNIT 12 TEACHING PRODUCTIVE SKILLS
This units serves to be the continuation of the four basic skills from the previous unit. The preceding unit covered the two receptive skills, reading and listening and this unit discusses further about the two productive skills usually necessary for the study and activate phase of learning. Speaking and writing is equally important as reading and listening as it allows the student to produce their own product of the language with the topic and theme of their own choice. The students not only get to make their own output but they have the privilege to experiment and be creative on how they're going to speak up their minds if only they are accurate and fluent with the language. In this case, practice makes a writer or speaker close to perfection and authenticity.
There are two factors and activities that needs to be considered and practised if an individual or a student want to be more confident in the art of speaking and writing and they are as follows:
I. Accuracy Activities - is concentrated on producing correct language. This activity requires students to study more by reading and listening and knowing all the appropriate rules in writing and speaking.
II. Fluency Activities - focuses more on creativity with the language or experimentation. It's also concentrated on the overall flow of communication.
*In improving the student's SPEAKING SKILLS a teacher can lead speaking activities such as drilling, model dialogue, discussions, debates and simulations, depending with the level of the students being taught.
To boost the student's confidence in doing such speaking activities a teacher can:
a. Encourage students with appropriate praises and incentives.
b. Let the students know that it's normal to make mistakes because learning is trial and error.
c. Manage the students well and teach them to be each other's support system to avoid peer pressure that can cause diffident students. Teach them that supporting each other would most likely make them succeed as a whole.
d. Make the topic timely and appropriate to the student's age and culture.
e. A teacher must always be aware of the student's previous topics to avoid unnecessary repetition and boredom.
WRITING SKILLS
>It is just as important to be articulate in writing. Here are 4 considerations when teaching writing skills:
a. Handwriting - this is one writing factor that needs to be considered as poor handwriting may turn away readers. It must at least be readable.
b. Spelling - this is an important issue that needs to be addressed seriously as it can cause miscommunication if there is one single lack of knowledge regarding the subject matter a writer is writing about. Any piece of work that has wrong spelling in it would not be creditable in any way.
c. Layout and Punctuation - layout and punctuation have so many different styles that's why a teacher must be aware of it and must know what's appropriate with every student's need.
d. Creative writing - it is the kind of writing that stimulates the mind to produce ideas that may not have been touched before or at least the sequence of it.
