UNIT 15 EVALUATION AND TESTING
Evaluation and testing is one of the most critical part of teaching as it is not only the indication of the efficacy of a certain technique of teaching but it also proves a teacher's quality of transferring knowledge to the students. It is however not always the fault of a teacher if failure is a result but if proper evaluation and assessment were to be conducted properly prior to teaching then teachers would have a better chance in getting better results for the student and themselves as well.
Therefore, the ways to evaluating students to assess their language level has been discusses in this unit.
I. Tutorials - a simple recap would be ideal for a class by reviewing them with the previous work done by discussing the aims and goals of the lesson, how well and creative were the students when performing given tasks and whether there are certain areas of the lesson they need help with. In short, this will be like having a critical control point by managing problems correctly.
II. Evaluation of the students - this is when students evaluate their course they are taking by means of a questionnaires especially made by the assessors in order to gain knowledge to where the weak spots are of the students as well as their strengths. It is meant to survey the individual effect of a certain lesson to the students. It is to gain useful information whether they are learning as planned by the teacher or of the teaching technique is appealing of the students.
III. Tests - written and oral exams are a sure way to know what has been learned by the students with all the previous lessons they have taken.
a. Placement Tests - with this tests teachers will be able to place new students in the correct class according to their ability and to check their knowledge and vocabulary. It is also a way to gauge the language level of the student.
b. Progress Tests - used periodically to gauge what language has been acquired and what language has been forgotten. This test is to know what topic needs reinforcement by the teacher.
c. Diagnostic Tests - it is the extensive kind of placement tests. It is used to enable teachers to prepare materials and lessons that will prompt students to move on the areas of their difficulty identified.
