UNIT 9 LESSON PLANNING
This unit includes everything a teacher must know about planning their lessons. All the structures of a lesson plan along with its functions is well written and explained in this unit.
Lesson plan is imperative due to its functions that guides the teaching process of a teacher as well as the learning phases of the students, here are the three functions that makes lesson plan important:
a. It is an AID TO PLANNING. In lesson plans, the end game or expected results of what the students have learned is where it is written. Therefore, it serves as a guideline for the teacher as well as the students to the path of enlightenment regarding a subject matter.
b. Lesson plan is a WORKING DOCUMENT because not only does it serves as a concrete guideline in teaching but it can also be flexible with its purpose so long as it serves the same results that was expected when it was written.
c. A lesson plan is a RECORD to keep the learning history of the students, of what they've been taught in the past in order to avoid repetition or missing a certain topic. It helps the teacher be organized during a teaching process.
A teacher must always keep in mind the basic principles in writing a lesson plan:
> Keep it simple.
> Never try to script the lesson plan.
> Structure must be maintained.
> Write the anticipated time for each activity in the margin.
> Check for balance of skills.
> Keep it flexible and open to adaptation.
*Be organized.
A teacher can always incorporate his/her own style of teaching in a lesson plan but it is most effective if a teacher follows a structured lesson plan and to learn first what is included in a basic one. They are as follows:
a. Learner objectives - end results of what the student's have learned from a certain topic of discussion and activities.
b. Personal aims - What a teacher wish to achieve.
c. Language point - The theme which your lesson is based.
d. Teaching aids - Material aids that you will need in the lesson.
e. Anticipated problems - How a teacher can combat common and anticipated classroom dilemmas that may impede the learning process of the students and with the teacher's teaching.
f. Procedure - the activities used to achieve the learner objectives.
g. Phase - Engage, Study and Activate
h. Timing - How long an activity must last like a time management.
i. Interaction - Who will be interacting at stage of the lesson.
j. Class level - the level of ability that the class has with the English language.
k. Number of students - number of students who will attend.
l. Date/time - this allows a teacher to keep a historical record of what you have done with a class and when.
m. Teacher's and observer's name - Only if the class is being monitored.
