This unit is about the receptive skills of listening and reading. Both are very important as part of language acquisition.
Reading and listening may be for a specific purpose (like to gather information or follow instructions) or for pleasure/entertainment. There are a number of different skills within listening & reading, such as scanning to find particular information, skimming for the general idea, predictive skills, detailed reading/listening, and using contextual informations. All these skills should be taught. It is very important that students know how to understand the general meaning of a text/piece of audio even if they are unfamiliar with some words or grammatical structures.
The unit finishes by explaining some teaching skills such as pre-teaching unfamiliar words, choosing the right text/audio, and choosing topics of interest.
