Phonetics deals with the actual sound of language. Phonology is more about the systems, not just sounds that are being produced but sounds that make a difference and don’t make a difference in a language. It is important to pay attention the actual sound of language because they’re quite different than the way we think it makes up language and what we hear in our heads. We don’t really notice the sounds we make when we speak so for example a Spanish speaking student may mistaken the word “those” as in “dose" as this is what the speaker hears and will identify the closest sound to their own language. Due to this, teachers need to keep in mind the native language and target language that may cause difficulty in understanding the appropriate pronunciation of words. Therefore it is important to emphasize on reception and creating activities for students that will help them to be more aware of their oral production and to help to correct them.
