This unit is about teaching pronunciation. Although a lot of pronunciation can be modelled by the teacher during the course of normal teaching, it can be very useful for students to understand more about phonology, that is, all the components of how we convey meaning through speech; and also, so that they feel that they can go away and read something new and they would know how to pronounce the words.
Intonation is very important for conveying meaning, as it helps to show the mood of the speaker and whether they want a response from the listening. This is all about the rise & fall in a sentence. Stress is the emphasis placed on different words in a sentence to change meaning (or simply to show the most important words) and on different syllables in a word.
Phonetics is the study of how different words sound. The phonetic language uses specific symbols for the different consonant and vowel sounds (as there are more than 26). Using phonetic symbols can mean students can read new words in a dictionary and know how to pronounce them.
This unit teaches also where different sounds are produced in the throat and mouth, and how (for example, by pushing air out through a narrow space or through the naval cavity). Understanding where & how sounds are produced can help the teacher to model correct pronunciation with exaggerated mouth movements and help the students to get closer to the correct way for new sounds that are not in their native language. E.g. the sh- sound is foreign to some Asian languages.
