There are many techniques and methodologies in teaching ESL to students. They all have their own advantages and limitations and no one method is truly effective. The main point in teaching is to be flexible enough to know what kind of method helps the students most in acquiring the new language to the fullest.
The main method that is focused on in this unit is the ESA method. The first stage of this method is the ENGAGE stage. It is mainly ensures that the students are motivated to become enthusiastic and participate in the learning process. This is done through activities and materials arouse the students' interest and act as the spring board to the lesson. The second stage is the STUDY stage where the drills and exercises are used to learn the new language point or concept. The final stage is the ACTIVATE stage. In this stage, the students are encouraged to use the language concepts they have learned creatively. The beauty about the ESA method is that it is quite flexible. The only thing that should be followed is that it should always start with an ENGAGE stage and end with an ACTIVATE stage. How it is designed in between depends on the teacher and what she thinks is needed to help the students learn.
