UNIT 17 EQUIPMENT AND TEACHING AIDS
The unit covered the equipment and teaching aids necessary for teachers to use in a classroom to execute the educating process effectively. The importance and usage of each teaching equipment were discussed:
I. Whit/Black Board - this is where teacher write most of the key words needed to emphasize in the lesson and teachers could be as creative as they can with the board. But even with creativity, there are also some sort of rules or basic principles to be followed in order to utilize the board effectively:
a. Start with a clean board.
b. Write legibly and neatly.
c. Use the correct writing tool for the board.
d. Keep the board clear and easy.
e. Section off the board for different subcategories of a lesson.
f. Adjust the size of your writing for everyone to see clearly.
g. Only put essential information on the board.
h. Erase what is no longer needed.
i. Avoid unnecessary capitalization.
j. Be accurate.
k. Involve the students in the writing process.
l. Clean the board at the end of the lesson.
II. Interactive Whiteboards or smart boards - a touchscreen computer that can be used as a white board.
When using IWB, it is important to know that it should be first tested to make sure there would not be any electronic error while teaching the class, the systems location should be selected properly, users should at least get a training before using, teachers can make lesson plans with an IWB as well as make their own lesson plan with IWB and lastly IWB can be used as a screen it in front of the class.
III. Overhead projectors - useful for pre-prepared overhead transparencies or as an alternative to the board.
IV. Visual Aids like real objects, pictures and photos that are used to stimulate the minds of the students, to whet their appetite, to prompt students for story building as well as elicit language from them.
V. Worksheets and work cards necessary for the study phase as it acts as prompt or cue materials and it's where students can write their own genuine material.
VI. The cassette recorder are used to record authentic materials and students can very well benefit by it once they evaluate themselves and decides tom improve.
VII. CD Player - a quick primary audio source in the classroom.
VIII. Videos and DVDs - used for presenting information, giving background to a topic, various forms of dialogues and interactions, building listening comprehension skills and many more. However here are a few advantages of Videos and DVDs over audio cassettes: videos are way easier to understand as it has audio and visual aids and it holds the students attention longer so long as the content is appropriate to their age and culture.
IX. Video Camera - used to record student during activity for analysis and discussion.
X. Dictionaries - the most imperative tool in teaching language as everything a student needs to know of vocabulary and its usage is written in it.
XI. Course Books - guided teaching.
XII. Resource Books - useful for adapting, supplementing and replacing material from a course book.
XIII. Photocopiers - necessary to multiply material and disseminate the information equally to the students.
XIV. Computers - most advanced tool for learning as it already has everything a student and a teacher will ever need.
