The focus of this unit has been upon methodologies with a great focus upon a specific methodology known as ESA (Engage, Study and Activate). This method has been formed as a newer alternative to older methods such as Grammar-Translation, Audio-Lingualism, Task-Based Learning, etc. It provides a great deal of flexibility in the classroom as it can be adapted for different purposes and learners' language levels. There are variations of the ESA known as the Straight-Arrow ESA lesson, the Patchwork ESA lesson and the Boomerang ESA lesson which all include repeats of some, or a number of, the ESA stages. An array of activities may be used to achieve the aims of each of the parts of an ESA lesson, and vary depending upon the lesson purpose and the group's language level, e.g. role-play, hangman, etc. Furthermore, the importance of feedback was discussed in relation to correction and various ways to approach them, e.g. student-student correction, self-correction and teacher-student correction. It is important to use the appropriate approach for the situation to prevent possible damage which may arise from correcting the learner.
