This unit covered materials that may be used in teaching English. Materials may be authentic or created by the teacher. Both authentic and created materials have advantages and disadvantages. Materials which may be used include: white board, visuals (ex. pictures), CDs or videos. Using a course book had advantages and disadvantages. However, it is helpful if the teacher uses the book to the extent that it will benefit her students and then omit, replace, supplement or adapt as needed and beneficial to the students.
I appreciate the fact that the material gave advantages and disadvantages to using a book. I think one thing that is important is to make sure that the activate stage is adequately addressed when using the book. If it is not adequate, I think it is important to supplement or replace, as students need to practice the language as much as possible.
