This unit is about coursebooks and lesson materials.
There are two main kinds of teaching materials; authentic and inauthentic materials. Authentic materials are those that were designed for native speakers of English. Therefore, they are not very suitable for beginner students and will need to be carefully selected that they are they appropriate level. But, they are often more interesting, and they create more confidence in the student if they are able to understand the material.
Created materials, or inauthentic materials, are those materials specifically created for language learners. Includes activities like gap fill, role play cards, and puzzles. These can be pitched to the level of the students, a big advantage. Care must be taken to target them to the students interests.
Coursebooks are a created material, with various pros and cons. Teachers should use them as a tool rather than a crutch, using them to help give them ideas and make sure they are covering all the relevant skills and materials, but being prepared to create supplemental or replacement materials on occasion.
