Unit 5 covered the basic set up and managing of classrooms, along with their pros and cons. It discussed the purpose and appropriateness for gestures, eye contact, and voice levels, as well as how the physical set up of a room can affect how students learn. Different types of groupings were discussed, and pros and cons were also given. While reading this unit I couldn't help but compare these methods to methods I myself experienced growing up in school. I must say I agree that the circle/horseshoe method of seating can be quite beneficial for building relationships among the students and teacher, as well as create an atmosphere that encourages students to be engaged. I also agree that in disciplining, it is vital to be consistent, and to not threaten to do something that you will not follow through with. Not only will that cause students to lose respect for you, but it can actually encourage the bad behavior because students may feel like they have gotten away with something.
