This unit was very helpful to show what makes for an effective lesson or not. It is clear from the videos that the teacher's attitude, as well as preparedness (in having elicitation materials, a well-planned lesson, and clear goals) made a huge difference in how well the students learned, as well as whether they had a good time during the lesson or not.
Some of the problems I noticed during the first lesson were: the teacher did not introduce himself or learn names. He seemed petulant when the students failed to grasp new concepts, even though he was not explaining what he wanted clearly or using good elicitation techniques. He made students feel bad when he corrected them loudly with a frustrated tone. The lesson was not well planned, and the lesson objective was not clear.
In the second lesson by contrast: the teacher was well-prepared, with a gap-fill activity on the board and numerous printed pictures and physical objects. The aim of the lesson was much clearer. He was friendly, introducing himself and learning the students' names. He had a well-structured E,S,A lesson. Overall, the difference just from attitude and preparedness on the teacher's part had a profound effect on the students.
