Hackensack, Minnesota TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit is about teaching receptive skills to students. Receptive skills, reading and listening comprehension, are key factors in a student’s progress in a new language; since they are the key to gaining understanding. Listeners and readers ability to understand are dependent on their mastery in the following areas:
Predictive skills: where one guesses the content of a reading from the headline or introduction
Scanning: to listen and read for specific information
Skimming: to read or listen in order to extrapolate the main idea or gist of what is happening
Detailed Information: to be able to read and comprehend an article in detail
Deduction of the context
In order to maximize the student’s abilities in each area the unit recommends preteaching vocabulary and carefully selecting reading and listening materials. Pre-teaching vocabulary is a great option for expanding the student’s knowledge and comprehension however, it is important not to be excessive since this could hinder the student by making it necessary for him to understand every word for comprehension. When choosing listening and reading material it is first important to choose topics that interest the students (vary the topics so that all students are interested one day or another). Secondly, it is important to find material that corresponds to the language level of the student but still challenges them a little.
