This unit discusses the importance of lesson planning. Planning the lesson will ensure the teacher focuses on the goals and objectives of a lesson, both for the class and on a personal level. Once the objectives are in place, it is easier for the teacher to choose a structure (E,S,A straight arrow, or another structure) and activities to achieve the teaching goals, and to collect the teaching materials they will need for the lesson.
Having the lesson plan to refer to will give the teacher more confidence. However, they should be prepared to be flexible, according to the class's needs. It also serves as a useful record. It is helpful to plan several lessons at once, to achieve over-arching goals and ensure different skills are in balance. The teacher should recognise that flexibility in lessons may mean the lesson sequence needs to be reviewed as well.
A good teacher will also do post-lesson reflections to help them improve. They can see how accurate their anticipated problems & solutions were, if activities took about how much time they thought it would, and the effectiveness of various components of the lesson.
