This unit focused on the different methods of evaluating and testing students. Students can be evaluated through tutorials, evaluation by the students and through tests. There are different kinds of tests that can be given to the students at different stages of their learning. The placement tests are usually used in order to asses the level of the students before they start their lessons. This test usually consists of the paper test, which measures their knowledge in grammar and vocabulary, and the oral test, which measures the speaking and listening skills of the students. Diagnostic tests are basically similar to the placement tests and help the teacher discover what the students already know, and therefore can prepare appropriate lessons.
Another test that can be administered is the progress test. This test is designed to measure how much the student has learned and to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the students. Practice tests are tests designed follow the structure and format of external tests, like TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC, Cambridge tests and Trinity College Tests. These are given to help the students prepare for the external tests that they need.
