This unit teaches the parts of speech (that is, the parts of a sentence) and how to classify types of words.
Understanding the different types of words is useful because then students can come to see how for at least some categories of words, there are rules to how the word is used or modified (e.g. how -ly is typically added to make an adverb, or how for regular verbs the past forms end in -ed). This helps to make learning new words of that type faster in the future.
Different languages often order the various parts of speech different, for example whether adjectives go before or after nouns. Understanding the parts of speech can help students to understand that although in their native tongue they use a part of speech in one way, in English it is necessary to use it in another way.
I learnt several new parts of speech from this course, for example gerunds and that verbs are transitive or intransitive, so this has deepened my knowledge base.
