This unit distinguishes productive and receptive skills and highlights the importance of speaking and writing. Productive skills present unique challenges since writing has many essential components, and speaking can be intimidating. However, activities can balance accuracy and fluency so students can learn proper form but stay engaged. I specifically enjoyed the creative writing part, and how storytelling is creative but builds receptive and productive skills. As an English major, I would certainly emphasize creative writing as an important part of some lessons. I started writing mini stories even in elementary school and found that creative exercise was quite fulfilling but useful as well. If students are allowed to write freely (or with guidelines) they can feel comfortable with the language and themselves.
