I have learned that there are two receptive skills which are reading and listening.We can read and listen for a purpose, an example can be looking at the stock markets reports to see how your shares are performing.Another reason why we read and listen is entertainment,an example would be reading a novel for pleasure.Readers and listeners use different skills when reading and listening which are predictive,scanning,skimming,detailed information and deduction from context.The teaching and learning of receptive skills presents a number of problems in which a teacher needs to address.The problem lies with the language in the text,the topic and the exercises the learners will do.Language is the biggest challenge and there are many ways of approaching language difficulty.We have Pre-teaching vocabulary and Careful selection of texts.
