The last Unit of the course is centered around troubleshooting any problems a teacher can be confronted with on the first day. Firstly, the type of group, (I.e. Existing or Newcomer). Existing students know each other and are familiar with EFL teaching methods, while In Newcomer groups students do not know each other and are unfamiliar with EFL. It is a teacher’s job to build rapport with students and gadge their English levels as well as their strengths and weaknesses so it is imperative that a book not be used on the first day. Many classes will have students at a variety of different language levels and as a teacher you have three distinct options on how to proceed with this matter. You can do nothing about this or divide the class into a strong and weak group, juggling them in an activity, or, what I find the most logical, pair the weaker student with a stronger one. Pairwork is also great when working with large groups.
