This unit is about the various teaching equipment and aids that can be found in the ESL classroom (or prepared for it). There are different advantages and disadvantages to the various teaching aids, and so they will be used for different things.
The whiteboard is probably the most common piece of equipment, and so lessons will often be built around the whiteboard. This is fine, as long as the whiteboard is used effectively, for example, by keep the volume of words down, writing clearly and big enough, and using different colours.
Another very important teaching aid in ESL classrooms is that of the visual aid. These are real objects or pictures/photos that can be used to elicit and teach new vocabulary, aid the memory process, and set the scene for role-play activities.
Worksheets and cards are also very useful for doing Study activities (especially if there is no coursebook) and to help guide or prompt students through Activate games/activities.
In the modern world, computers are commonly used for many things, such as playing audio and visual, language games or quizzes, as resources (including dictionaries) and to make neat worksheets.
