The teacher's attitude and approach to the lesson has an incredibly large impact upon the engagement and attitude of students. If you come in with a poor or negative attitude, the response will be the negative and closed-off. If you come in with a friendly, positive attitude, your students will be much more willing to engage with you and respond during the lesson. Providing students with examples of tasks and sentences which they are expected to complete is also a good way to set them at ease regarding how to do the activity, and will give you better work as students know what is expected of them. Creating a fun, engaging, level-appropriate activity is also critical. I have seen the difference one's voice as a teacher also makes, and realised it is vital to project clearly and slowly to be understood better. I struggled to follow the teacher in the first lesson myself because of how quickly and quietly he spoke. Rephrasing what you have said is also a good way to help students understand something if it has confused them. Simply repeating the same explanation a number of times has no real positive effect or change. Lastly, if you seem engaged and interested as a teacher, your students will be more inclined to engage themselves.
